Capabilities:
APS business is depositing polymer coatings by unique
plasma CVD methods for highly controllable chemistry and superb adhesion of conformal
coatings on a broad range of substrates at low temperature.
- Type of work: chemical synthesis of unique materials
for conformal application of adherent, lubricious, durable and media resistant coatings.
- Technical areas: specialty chemicals, polymer thin
films, electronic coatings, industrial harsh-environment sensors, personal care product
coatings for lubrication, corrosion protection and color enhancement.

Some representative projects:
- Mike participated in the early days of sensor development in the
invention of the first solid state pH electrode (for which he received a patent in 1982).
Development of PlasmaleneTM coated sensors
Development of stable, adherent membrane for protection of gold and
platinum oxygen sensors and biogalvanic batteries (patents, 1981, 1983)
Novel continuous feed plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition
(PECVD) reactor (patented 1993).
Plasma synthesized coatings for hermetic sealing of integrated
circuits for implantable devices, such as the total artificial heart (TAH) program, for
NIH.
